Not that bad, as it turns out. My dress isn’t made for swing, but Drake guides my feet and lets me ride out the twirls slowly. We laugh and spin and his hand fits at the small of my back like it’s made to rest there.

Then, inevitably, the music slows.

‘Do you want to stop?’ he asks, but Felton is watching from the other side of the room, so I pull Drake closer and let him take me in his arms.

‘I’ve changed my mind about the dress,’ he says as the lights dim.

‘Oh?’

‘I like it. I like it a lot.’ His fingertips play down my naked spine like whispers on the breeze, there and yet not, tickling my skin. We are cheek to cheek, until he lowers his head to kiss my bare shoulder.

‘This isn’t real, Drake,’ I whisper. I’m surprised that I sound a little sad about it. That’s the mark talking.

‘Let me dream.’ He kisses my neck. ‘Just for a few hours.’

This is what it’s like to be wrapped in the scent of the mark, with every pheromone telling us that we belong to each other. It’s exactly like a dream, as though we’ve stepped beyond the world and are swaying in a space carved outside it just for us. The low lights don’t help.

‘This isn’t me,’ I say, more to myself than to him.

‘Is that what you think?’ He lifts his head to look into my eyes. ‘You think you have to be just one person? With all due respect, that’s bollocks. You can be as many different versions of yourself as you like. The tenacious one who solves every case, the fucked-up one who turns up for meetings covered in blood and alcohol, and the aggressive one who barges into my own home to yell at me.’

I smile despite myself.

‘Then there’s the one in my arms right now,’ he whispers, swaying me gently, ‘all soft velvet and skin. You can be whoever you want to be, Valentine. They’re all you.’

‘And how many versions of Killian Drake are there in your head?’ I ask, trying to brush away the intimacy of his words.

‘More than you’ll ever know.’ His eyes are fixed on mine, dark and unreadable. ‘Some versions of me get washed away with the years and some embed like bullets then fragment until they’re too small to pull back out again.’

‘Sounds painful.’

‘The pieces I can’t shake aren’t always the ones I’d choose to keep.’ He’s still now, his hand at my cheek, his thumb stroking my skin. ‘It’s the broken parts that get lodged in your bones.’

He’s going to kiss me. I can see it in the slight tilt of his head, in his hooded eyes and parted lips, and I can’t bear it. It doesn’t feel like we’re pretending anymore.

I step out of his arms and smile.

‘Shall we do something else?’ I say brightly. ‘Maybe a game? Didn’t Windsor say there was a games room?’

Then I catch sight of the buffet being set up behind him.
